Strategies used to communicate to the audience

Strategies used to communicate to the audience:
Description
Lou’s Place
The writer used descriptive words or adjectives in describing different features of the restaurant. Descriptive words such as “squalid”, “perennial” are some examples. The writer gives an indebt description of the features of the restaurant. The writer achieves this by carefully selecting words that shows the reader exactly how she feels. For instance, the writer posits “the hundreds of booted loggers, railroad workers, and oil field roughnecks trekking through have worn the carpet then.” This gives the reader a vivid picture of the writer’s perception of the many persons that come to the restaurant. It also gives the audience and idea of how old the restaurant looks without the writer having to state that out directly.
The writer also uses flashback in the descriptive piece to emphasize to the reader what have changed and remained the same in the restaurant over a period of time; which helps create a vivid picture of the atmosphere she is trying to convey.
Lastly, the writer makes use of the reader’s senses by using sensory images for instance the writer uses words associated with the sense of smell “conducted in a haze of aromas…” and “present odor of”. Words associated with hearing are also evident in the descriptive piece such as “giggling”, “strutting around”.

Argument
The Faceless Teacher
The writer uses formal language to communicate to his audience. The piece is informative as the writer makes use of definitions “Innovation is the ability to…”, and indebt explanations. The writer also uses a high level of vocabulary to communicate to his audience, this clearly highlights that his audience are educators such as teachers and ministry officials. Hence, the writer uses appropriate use of language to communicate to his targeted audience.
The writer also uses figurative language such as simile. For example “websites can shift and vanish like ghost”. This shows the extent to which technological advancements is rapidly changing. Additionally, the writer makes use of comparisons. He compares the web as an aid to education like a calculator being an aid to mathematics. He uses this simple everyday tool to bring across the argument that the computer is just a tool that enhances individual’s knowledge and understanding of different concepts.
The writer also uses an interesting title for the essay to capture the attention of his audience from the start. The Faceless Teacher signifies that in modern societies, too much emphasis is placed on mediums such as computers to transfer knowledge thus the need for teacher-student interaction is downplayed.

Narrative Writing
Alina
Through the use of descriptive words (choice of words) the writer allows the reader to gain an understanding of how the writer’s feels. Most of the scenes described in the story give an indication of the writer’s emotional state. Words such as “unromantic, disgusting” is used to show exactly how the writer feels about particular ideas or issues.
The writer uses sensory images to give the reader a vivid image of the atmosphere. The writer makes use of the reader’s senses for example, hearing (loud voices, sounds of the neighbor’s usual morning affairs).
The writer uses personification “sun is struggling” to emphasize on the weather in this place. The word struggling gives the vivid image that the place is cold. Other images such as “the sun struggling through masses of cloud” also paint a clear picture of the atmosphere.
