The Writing Process

The writing process allows for teaching students to write in a variety of genres encouraging creativity, and incorporating writing convention. The writing process gives teachers the opportunity to intervene in students’ writing at any stage. Effective feedback results in better end results. This process attempts to give students adequate practice which will develop their writing skills. The writing process also allows students to reflect on their strengths and weaknesses at every stage. It also limits the focus placed only on the final product because they get an opportunity to recognize the importance of other stages. For instance, students may get to know the importance of the pre-writing stage; brainstorming before writing. It also allows students to use their first drafts or the previous stages to reflect on how different their final draft is and how much they have grown. Of course, teaching the writing process may be time consuming. However, it is one of the ways to drastically improve students writing.
